Learn what dearness allowance is.
Dearness Allowance (DA) is an additional component added to the salary of employees by the government to provide relief from inflation. Its purpose is to mitigate the impact of rising prices. Dearness Relief (DR) is provided to pensioners to provide similar relief.
How are DA and DR determined?
Dearness allowance for central government employees is determined based on the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW). This data is released monthly by the Labor Bureau. DA is calculated based on this data. Usually, announcements are made later. Arrears are then compensated.
