The tussle within the Grand Alliance in the Bihar Assembly elections has now stirred up Jharkhand politics as well. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has clearly indicated that it will seriously review the alliance in Jharkhand. JMM President and Chief Minister Hemant Soren will review the alliance after the Bihar elections and make further decisions. According to sources, Hemant has displeased with the RJD’s political conduct. He may formulate a new strategy to maintain the respect of the party and its workers.
JMM’s central general secretary, Vinod Kumar Pandey, said on Tuesday that the major constituents of the Grand Alliance misled the JMM until the last moment. It did not receive a respectable participation in Bihar. JMM had announced that it would contest six seats in Bihar, but in keeping with the alliance’s dharma, the party decided not to field candidates. JMM was sidelined in Bihar, while in Jharkhand we have always given full respect to our allies. The political conduct of RJD and Congress seen in Bihar is a matter of concern for the alliance. Hemant Soren will review the alliance in Jharkhand and then take a decision.
JMM leaders remind that in the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, the JMM-led alliance allocated seven seats to the RJD. Despite winning only one seat, Hemant Soren, in keeping with alliance dharma, retained Satyanand Bhokta from the RJD quota as a minister for the entire five years, giving him due respect. The JMM adopted a similar stance toward the RJD in 2024. Despite winning four seats: Deoghar, Godda, Vishrampur, and Hussainabad, one RJD MLA, Sanjay Prasad Yadav, was appointed a minister.
The future strategy will be decided
Political analysts believe that this stance by the JMM could have far-reaching implications for coalition politics in Jharkhand. If the JMM remains neutral in the Bihar elections, the Grand Alliance could suffer losses. JMM spokesperson Pandey said that the party still supports opposition unity, but the experience in Bihar suggests that a review of the coalition’s functioning is necessary. However, this statement by the JMM has created a new stir in Jharkhand politics. It is believed that Hemant Soren will decide on the alliance strategy after careful consideration of the Bihar issue.
There will be retaliation: Sudhivya
Minister and JMM leader Sudibya Kumar said in Giridih that if the JMM was not to be given the seat, it should have been made clear in advance. We were deliberately misled. Jharkhandi interests have been betrayed in Bihar. We will not forget this. We want to make it clear that the JMM is a strong voice of the tribals. Attempts have been made to suppress it, and there will be retaliation.
